Reimagining Life Before Plastic

When you think about your daily routine—shopping for groceries, cleaning your home, or taking a shower—it’s hard to imagine doing any of it without plastic. Plastic products have become so deeply ingrained in modern life that we often forget they haven’t been around forever (it's only been popularized since the 1970's). But there was a time, not so long ago, when people relied on natural materials and clever solutions to meet their everyday needs.

At Floofah, we’re inspired by the way people lived sustainably before plastic became the norm. That’s why we’ve created the “How We Lived Our Lives Before Plastic” blog series, a journey into the past to uncover the sustainable habits and materials people used to get through their daily lives. From kitchen tools to personal care routines, this series will show how thoughtful, eco-friendly practices were once the default—and how they can be again.

Why It Matters

Every year, over 300 million tons of plastic are produced globally, and much of it ends up in landfills, oceans, or incinerators. More than 500 million plastic sponges are discarded and landfilled in the United States alone. But history teaches us that we don’t need plastic to live comfortably, and there's no "green tax" associated with living a cleaner life. By learning about what we did before plastic, we can take steps to reduce our reliance on it and embrace more sustainable, compostable alternatives—like Floofah, the same plant fiber sponges that's been used around the world for thousands of years.

What’s Coming in the Series

Here’s a sneak peek at the topics we’ll explore in the next six blogs:

  1. How We Used to Clean: Discover the natural brushes, cloths, and sponges people used for cleaning before synthetic materials and disposable wares took over.
  2. The Original Grocery Bag: Learn how shoppers carried their goods in reusable cloth bags, baskets, and other sustainable containers.
  3. Packaging Before Plastic: Dive into the ingenious ways people stored food using natural, biodegradable materials.
  4. Personal Care the Natural Way: Explore how people kept clean with natural loofahs, handcrafted soaps, and wooden brushes.
  5. Toy Time: Uncover the charm of wooden, metal, and fabric toys that kids cherished before plastic playthings filled the shelves.
  6. Clothing Before Polyester: Revisit the natural fibers like cotton, wool, and hemp that were staples in pre-plastic wardrobes.
  7. New Materials For the Future: See how technology is changing the way we live and replacing plastic for better lives

How You Can Join the Movement

We don’t have to invent something new to live sustainably—sometimes, we just need to look to the past for inspiration. Floofah’s natural, compostable sponges are part of this effort to reclaim simple, effective, and eco-friendly solutions for everyday life.
